Laser scanning ship wrecks

As an avid SCUBA diver when i hear “ship wreck” my pulse races! A wreck is like a SCUBA diver’s adventure playground. However, not all ships are available to dive. And it’s a good job too, else they would all be wrecks!

This ship, Lord Nelsons HMS Victory, is far from wrecked (although it is fair to say it hasnt sailed for some years). It was recently scanned by Pointools user Derri Jones. Its a beautiful example of detailed 3D laser scanning at work; it was quickly, accurately, and safely measured to create a digital replica as a point cloud.

I had all but forgotten about it when i got an email from a Pointools Partner asking if we have any point cloud examples of ship wrecks. Immediatley i remembered it and forwarded links… then i thought i had better tweet it… then i thought i had better blog about it too. Remind everyone of the beauty of this important part of our Naval heritage.
